Claude Code: What It Is, How It’s Different, and Why Non-Technical People Should Use It

Notes
- Cross-reference: In Lenny’s “Everyone Should Use Claude Code More” (#12), Torres describes her writing workflow: “I now write all of my content with Claude Code in VS Code. We iterate on an outline, it helps me improve the hook, it conducts research for me and adds citations to my outline, and it reviews and gives feedback on each section as I write.” Related pattern: Helen Lee Kupp (#9 in same article) describes a voice-notes → structured-content pipeline (stroller walks → research themes → articles → LinkedIn posts). When processing this source, consider extracting a “voice/thought → structured content” technique and cross-referencing both.
Raw Content
Teresa Torres breaks down Claude Code for non-technical users — what it is, how it compares to other Claude access points, and why it represents a fundamental shift in how people work with AI.
The Comparison: Four Ways to Access Claude
| Feature | Claude.ai | Claude Projects | Claude Desktop App | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Access through | Browser tab | Browser tab | Desktop app | Terminal/file system |
| Memory | Search past chats | Project context | Project context | All files act as memory/context |
| Access files | Upload manually | Upload manually | Upload manually or via MCP | Yes, automatically |
| Shortcuts | Agent Skills | Project instructions, Agent Skills | Saved prompts, Agent Skills | /commands, custom agents, hooks, Agent Skills |
| Portability | None | None | None | Complete - all stored locally |
Competitive Analysis Example
Browser Claude: Work one competitor at a time, copy-paste between chats and Google Docs, manage context manually, start from scratch each time.
Claude Projects: Shared instructions and files across chats. Still copy-paste for output. Still one competitor per chat.
Claude Desktop + MCP: Can read/write Google Docs directly. Still one chat at a time, still babysitting.
Claude Code: Create markdown files, build reusable commands and agents. Run four competitor analyses in parallel. Create /update-competitors command that handles everything. A month later: add competitor name to list, run command, done.
Why These Differences Matter
You Stop Repeating Yourself: Files ARE your context. No re-uploading, no pasting into chats.
You Build Systems That Compound: First setup takes 15 minutes. Every future run takes 1 minute. “You stop using AI as a question-answering service and start building AI-powered systems that get better over time.”
You Work in Parallel: Each competitor gets own context window (no degradation), same framework (no drift), simultaneous processing.
You Own Your Data: Everything is markdown. Switch to Codex (ChatGPT equivalent) by pointing it at same files. No vendor lock-in.
Getting Started (Non-Technical)
- Open Terminal (Mac: Applications > Utilities; Windows: search Terminal)
- Install Node.js (one-time, nodejs.org)
- Install Claude Code (
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash) - Start Claude Code in a project folder (
claude) - Complete initial setup (/init)
“Using Claude Code isn’t about being technical. It’s about being willing to try three to four simple commands.”
Note on Agent Skills
Anthropic launched Agent Skills across all platforms. Skills = stored instructions + context files + scripts. More powerful than Projects. But unclear if Skills can add to their own context files. Unclear if Skills can run in parallel like agents. “For now, it looks like they might help with creating some nice shortcuts, but don’t quite reach the full power of what you can do by mixing slash commands, agents, and hooks in Claude Code.”
